Our downtown Charleston location is The Card Room, located at: 78 Line Street Charleston, SC 29403
Please note that some events may take place at other locations, so always check the event description before attending.
Not in Charleston or Chicago? If you are interested in hosting a mahjong event elsewhere, we would still love to hear from you. Please email us at hello@holymahj.com to inquire about potential travel options or bookings for private events in other areas.
What is your cancellation policy?
We understand that life happens and plans can change. If you cancel 48 hours prior to the event, you will receive a credit for a future event of similar format.
With advance notice, we will always do our best to accommodate schedule changes whenever possible. However, because we reserve seats, instructors, and materials in advance, we are unable to offer refunds for cancellations made less than 48 hours before the event.
If you have questions about a reservation or need to make a change, please reach out to us at hello@holymahj.com.
Do you offer private lessons or private events?
Yes! We offer private lessons and events for both Charleston and Chicago locals.
Pricing varies based on group size and location. All private lessons include everything needed to learn the game. We offer private events in your space, or can host your group at our card room location in downtown Charleston. To learn more or reserve your event, email us at hello@holymahj.com.
Can I rent The Card Room space for a private event?
Yes! We offer access to our space for mahjong gatherings, private parties, pop-ups, corporate events, and other special occasions.
Email hello@holymahj.com with details about your event, and we'll provide a custom quote.
Is instruction provided during Open Play events or league nights?
Open Play and league events are designed for players who are comfortable playing independently.
While our instructors are always happy to answer quick questions or help clarify more nuanced rules, these events are not structured lessons and do not include formal instruction.
That said, Open Play and league nights can still be a great way for newer players to gain experience, get more games in, and improve their skills.
If you're feeling a little rusty or aren't quite ready to play independently, we recommend taking a Guided Play class first as a refresher before joining Open Play or league.
How many lessons do I need to take before I know how to play Mahjong?
The answer is different for everyone and depends on your learning style and comfort level.
We offer Newbie Classes for brand-new players and Guided Play classes for those taking their second, third, or fourth lesson. Some players prefer to take multiple Newbie Classes to become more familiar with the tiles and game mechanics, while others benefit from attending several Guided Play sessions to build confidence and gain experience.
The good news is that there is no "right" pace. We're here to help you learn and improve, no matter your experience level or learning style.
